Handling rocks, mud, snow and ice are what off-road tires are all about. There are some trade offs, however. Especially for handling mud, the tread pattern must have large lugs to allow the tire to 'clean' itself. Otherwise, the lugs fill with mud so that the tires will become slick and without the traction you need. On the other hand, the off-road tire will not put as much tread on paved roads.
